Appointed as judge pro tem more than 83 times for the Marion County Municipal and Superior Courts between May 1991 and December 2000, 71 of which were in the Criminal Division.  Appointed as judge pro tem on 3 occasions in 2011 for the Marion County Small Claims Court, Warren Division.  Served occasionally as an administrative law judge for the Indiana Department of Insurance from August 1989 to September 1990.

Significant Legal Accomplishments:

Greg prosecuted more than fifty major drug felony cases, including 4 jury trials, as a Marion County Deputy Prosecutor in 1991.  In private practice since 1991, Greg represented more than 500 clients in the areas of criminal defense, personal injury, intentional torts, appellate advocacy, and civil litigation.  In that private practice, Greg completed 14 criminal jury trials, including 11 with felony charges, 4 of which were in federal court, and 5 civil jury trials.  He completed 87 appeals, 15 of which resulted in published decisions, including important decisions on repressed memory (Doe v. Shults-Lewis Child & Family Services, Inc., 718 N.E.2d 738 (Ind. 1999)) and automatism (McClain v. State, 678 N.E.2d 104 (Ind. 1997)).  In his appellate practice, Greg has presented oral argument five times before the Indiana Supreme Court, and twice before the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Other Legal Involvement:

Greg taught Legal Research, Analysis, and Communication to third semester law students at the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis from August 2004, until January 2005.  Greg was the 2nd place winner of the 2004 Indiana State Bar Association Legal Writing Contest for Fair Play: Soccer’s Answer to the Harmless Error Doctrine, Res Gestae, June 2005, at 26.  Greg served on the Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Council from 2004 through 2006.  He served as Marion County Assessor from 2007 through 2010 where he presided over a state-ordered reassessment and a voter-directed consolidation of township assessor offices.  Greg has volunteered as a board member for seven non-profit organizations, including Drug Free Marion County and the Crooked Creek Multi-Service Center.

Personal Statement:
A judge must not merely know the law.  He must also manage each case fairly with respect to all parties and their attorneys.  Managing disputes requires attention to the smallest details while maintaining the big picture.  I have enjoyed working as a soccer referee for 29 years officiating tough matches involving semi-professional teams and Division I college conferences.  This experience, coupled with 26 years of a litigation and appellate practice has taught me how important excellence and attention to detail are to the parties involved.  My service as City-County Councillor and Assessor taught me about the costs and logistics of operating an important county agency such as a Superior Court and the need to conserve scarce county resources to lessen the burden on taxpayers.  I believe my experience would be a welcome addition to the Marion County Superior Court bench.
