Education:

Judicial Experience:
Elected in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. 2001- Criminal Court 10: Misdemeanor Court 2001-2003. Criminal Court 14: D Felony Drug Court 2003-2007. Criminal Court 9: General D Felony Court 2007-present. Criminal Court 6: Major Felony Court. Judge Stoner is a recognized leader in the probation field. He supervised the Marion County Probation Department for five years and as Chair of the State Probation Committee for the Indiana Judicial Conference. He received the William G. Faches Award for exceptional community service from the National Association of Probation Executives in 2008. He is a regular lecturer and panel participant statewide on probation issues.

Significant Legal Accomplishments:
Throughout his career, Judge Stoner has participated in major policy initiatives. He is an elected representative to the State Board of Directors, an advisory body to Chief Justice Shepard and the Indiana Supreme Court. For the past 3.5 years, he has served as co-chair of the state Strategic Planning Committee, which seeks improvements in all judicial operations throughout Indiana. Locally, he has participated on numerous committees to improve the court system, including leading the discussion for proposals which substantially raised minimum salary levels for clerks , public defenders and deputy prosecutors, and ended the 30 year federal oversight of the Marion County Jail and the unsupervised early release of prisoners. Prior to his judicial career, he was a deputy prosecutor in Marion County, where he served as a Senior Deputy and the Director of Training. He has participated in numerous clinics on trial advocacy, either as a lecturer or judge.


Other Legal Involvement:

Judge Stoner serves on the state Records Management Committee, which develops policies for how all court records are created, maintained, and managed. This committee also makes policy recommendations on the judiciary’s administrative rules. He is an active member of the Indianapolis Bar Association, where he has previously co-chaired the Bench-Bar Conference and served on the diversity committee. He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, where he serves on the Improvements in the Judiciary committee and the recent Law School for Legislators. Judge Stoner regularly supervises interns and actively encourages young lawyers to become active in the Bar Association and the community.
