BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:

Education: Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis, 1983

Judicial Experience: Judge, Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division 17. Types of cases handled: Domestic Violence (Misdemeanor and Felony). Magistrate, Marion Superior Court, Juvenile Division, 1995 to January 2003. Types of cases handled: Delinquency, Paternity, Custody, Child In Need Of Services (CHINS), Termination of Parental Rights.

Significant Legal Accomplishments: I wrote the 1994 amendment of the Child Hearsay Statute and testified before numerous legislative committees. The amendment was important in child abuse cases where the competent child panics and freezes on the witness stand when faced with a courtroom full of people. Over 12 years, I defended children who had been victims of physical and sexual abuse, working long hours on the investigation and preparation for trial.

Other Legal Involvement: Member of the Core Group of the Family Law Division Task Force, working with judges, practitioners, and agency representatives for the purpose of designing a Family Law Division that fits the culture of Marion County. Member of the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono for two years.

Personal Statement: I have practiced law in the courts of Marion County for 21 years and have been on the bench for 9 years. I believe that I have the temperament, the experience, and the ability to decide the law in a just, fair and objective manner. Much must be done to improve the efficiency and quality of our courts, and I would welcome the opportunity to be a part of the judiciary that will be called upon to effect the necessary changes in the years ahead.
